COMPARISON of CARPET CLEANING METHODS

by Joseph Gunterman,
Head of Cabin Services, United Air Lines O'Hare Field. (retired after 35 years)

FOAM. Provides nothing more than a surface cleaning through the application of detergents. Under the best conditions, only 5% to 10% of any detergent residue is removable with the most efficient vacuum system. If 90% to 95% of the sticky detergent residue remains in the carpet, re-soil will be a serious and costly problem.

DRY CHEMICAL. Must be used (brushed in ) in well ventilated areas due to toxicity. It can harm the operator and requires excessive vacuuming to remove unwanted residue build-up. In addition, strong chemical odors usually linger after use and application is generally limited to certain types of carpets. For example, one major brand cannot be used on cotton, rayon, shag, summer fibers and carpets with latex backing. Since most people do not know exactly what they have, they could unknowingly damage their carpets.

STEAM. Of course, is not really steam. It can be hot, or warm or even cold water depending on the operator. Even though water is the most efficient cleaner known, it can cause serious damage if not properly used. For example, water can:

  1. Shrink some carpets (seam separation)
  2. Damage floors underneath.
  3. Generate mold and mildew.
  4. Cause water stains and browning.
  5. Remain in carpet fibers and backing for extended periods depending on humidity.
  6. Set certain types of stains permanently with hot water application.
  7. Increase out-of-service time.
  8. Require separate spotting operation.

ARGOSHEEN causes none of these problems. It cleans by simply transferring soil from the carpet fibers to cotton pads or mops. Soil which is subsequently washed down the drain. It also cleans without foam or excessive application of water. Argosheen is fast and dries in minutes. On a large expanse of carpet (lobbies, halls), an ARGONAUT TM Towel Machine or cotton pads under a rotary machine can clean up to 1000 square feet per hour. In close areas, the ARGONAUT TM is low enough to clean under most furniture and display cases. If using a rotary machine, soil is removed under these areas with a cotton mop, eliminating the need for removing furniture, etc.

Argosheen is not a new product. Argo & Company, Inc. has been in Business for more than 40 years. During this period their products have been used extensively by many airlines as well as a select group of hospitals, hotels and motels across the country. Argosheen is a prestige product. It continues to gain in popularity even without the usual Madison Avenue hype.

TIPS ON CARPETS

by Dorothy P. Argo President

Argo & Company, Inc.

Some of the carpet and fiber mills are recommending Argosheen with very hot water to solve complaints on cleaning acrylic and polyester fibers. Remember when buying carpets these carpets are harder to clean than nylon or wool.

For long life and easy maintenance, avoid the beautiful shag plushes. Some of the strands of carpet fibers tend to lie down and become lost, changing the appearance from a sandy beach to a pebble beach.

For instance, If you know that the thinnest most inexpensive carpet, wool or synthetic, will look well and wear years longer than a thick carpet, think what it can save in the original purchase. Mr. Masland of Masland Carpets wrote that a tightly woven thin carpet of synthetic fibers can be flame proofed, but the customer wants a thicker carpet.

Architects and specifiers need to know about the simple, inexpensive literally fool proof method of cleaning Argo teaches that makes carpets last for what the carpet industry considers too long. That is understandable.

What is not bearable is their loading airplanes, hotels, and homes with materials that give no warning to persons trained in the use of fire extinguishers. People, who before petroleum products, were accustomed to putting out fires with water or salt or by smothering them and have time to call the fire department. It is just too much to have to realize that one may die if his home catches fire.

What you need to know begins with the fact that the expense and lack of success of fire retarding petroleum based interiors was well demonstrated by the American Hotel in Chicago. What horrendous expense and what an ugly room and still not safe. How long will it retard the flames? How long is retard?

Contrary to the advice of the carpet industry Argo has proven that thin, even really thin, inexpensive carpeting gives longer service and shows less wear and absence of traffic patterns than thick carpets and several times as long as the very expensive wool plush.

Nothing removes as many spots as Argosheen. Even Argosheen cannot remove a spot after wrong solutions have turned it yellow or orange color.

Delta says they have never found a spot Argosheen would not take up nor a product that equals Argosheen after 30 years exclusive system wide use. Both the Pentagon and the Queen Mary have reported delighted satisfaction with their recent orders of both Argosheen and the ARGONAUT Towel Machines and have re-ordered. DuPont's vast expanses faze it not. When asked why they like it better than any of their large machines, a member of their cleaning management answered, " It cleans. "

Please order the rug mop. It will help you to "spot " harmlessly and make it easy to prolong the life of your carpets as much as 20 years. Argosheen is guaranteed to please or your purchase price will be refunded and you may keep the mop and unused portion to try again another day.
